Drummer Kombat 2004
If you are looking for something new and exciting in Montreal, in the middle of the week, then I highly recommend Drummer Kombat 2004 at Foufounes Électriques. Sixteen drummers battle it out every Wednesday night for a chance to advance to the next round of competition. Eight bouts a night, one-on-one. Eight move forward and the other eight go home.
The competition started with 127 audition spots resulting in 84 moving forward to actual one-on-one combat. The preliminary bouts started January 28th and run through until March 10th. A secondary round of bouts will begin March 17th and the combats will continue every Wednesday until May 5, 2004.
Each bout consists of five rounds and they flip a hockey puck, with a red side and a blue side, to see who starts. This is how the rounds are structured:
1st round:
There are 2 X 15 seconds each
Ex : B / R / B / R
2nd round:
There are 3 X 15 seconds each
Ex : B / R / B / R / B / R
3rd round:
There are 2 X 20 + 20 seconds together
Ex : B / R / B / R + ensemble
4th round:
There are 3 X 20 seconds + 30 seconds together
Ex : B / R / B / R / B / R + ensemble
5th round:
15 seconds together + 1 X 20 seconds + 45 seconds together
Ex : Ensemble + B / R + ensemble
The prizes for the winner are a $10,000 drum kit, a trip to Cuba for two and a one year VIP pass to all the events at Foufs. For all the details check out their web site at: www.drummerkombat.com.
We were at the February 4th competition to cheer on our champion. There was a lot of good, hard competition. All the competitors had more than 10 years experience. There was one old guy who had 27 years experience but the kid he was playing against just had a lot more talent. Our champion has 14 years experience. Of course our champion won his combat and also had the highest score of the evening.
The judging is 60% from the panel of judges and 40% from the audience. The panel of judges is made up of well known local musicians and professors.
So come on down and cheer for your own champion. It’s good clean fun, the beer is cheap and Foufs is always a blast.

Drummer Kombat Update
Our champion wins his quarter final bout in the first EVER over time round.
As each week goes by the best just keeps getting better. It’s exciting to watch people push themselves to the edge and look for more. Our champion plays again on April 7th.
Drummer Kombat Finale
May 11, 2004 marked the final evening of the first annual Drummer Kombat. It was held at le Club Soda and I’m sure you could feel the electricity in the air.
In the final weeks of the combat, the competitors were pulling out all the stops. They were bringing in all their whistles and bells as the competition was becoming fierce. It was becoming a true “Battle Royal” as drummer was pitted against drummer, playing for the coveted prize.
When you watch a drummer play you can’t help but appreciate all the energy that goes into their performance. It was very evident these last few weeks as each drummer took their turn to prove that they are the best. For each winner that was named there were those who had lost. Our champion made it to the top ten but he is a winner to me.
A big congratulations goes out to the winners. In first place is Isaac Dumont, in second is Pierre Langlois and in third is Antony Trujillo. Congratulations, also, to all who competed and for giving us something exciting to do on our Wednesday nights. Once again we have seen some of the many talents that Quebec has to offer. We hope to see you next year.
